Ode to a Mantis

Inspired by David Attenborough's Trials of Life DVD, where I sat a watched a rather disgusting scene where lickle baby praying mantis were emerging from their egg mass. It looked like something out of Alien I'm telling you, and the music they chose involved this bizarre high pitched screaming..... great last thing at night viewing if you are of a nervous disposition

So here is Ode to a Mantis. This is about as intelligent as you will get out of me at the moment, my head is still grappling with partical physics....

Hidden deep within the tropical depths
where only spirits and traitors lie
locked in an ever evolving battle
of wary acknowledgement
Tooth, and claw
A not so noble gentleman
dwells
silently watching the dewy mists
part and expose
the days lip smacking options
Unsheathed daggers
of emerald majesty
held high in prayer to his maker
His cloak of forest cloth
rustles and clicks
as it hangs from his skeletal frame
A shape so alien
long in length and spite
His all seeing eyes curve and roll
fixing his gaze upon your
weakened nerves
For this is his world that you enter now
A world of predatory notion
For the praying mantis
takes no prisioners
Only breakfast, lunch and dinner
